I left on
Aug. 14 and got home on Aug. 18.
I'll start by saying that I actually started this trip with a
plan to skirt the southern edge of Yellowstone, head down to the southeast
corner of Idaho, head down into northern Utah, cut through the Rockies and stop
in the Boulder area to visit friends and family before heading home via northern
Nebraska. The whole middle portion of this trip was changed once I got to
northern Wyoming. The Bighorn Mtns and Beartooth pass are absolutely
beautiful and there are TONS of great roads. The time of year was perfect
too. Traffic was pretty light since school has now started and Sturgis is
done.
Also, note that the dates on every single picture are wrong.
You need to add a day to what's shown. Kind of embarrassing actually...
Day 1
I left Omaha at around 8:30am and only went to Sioux Falls,
SD. The main purpose of this leg of the trip was to help my
brother move into his new apartment that day. On the way, I took
some interesting pictures of what remains of the flooding that occurred
in SD with all the rain they got earlier in the Summer. These
pictures show what used to be some farmer's fields. |

Day 2
I left the next morning and took I-90 at breakneck speed across
South Dakota. Once I got to Wyoming, I had to make a small detour
to check out Devil's Tower. After that, I didn't stop until I got
to Sheridan, WY where I stayed the night. |

Day 3
I left Sheridan the next morning and took Rt. 14. What a great
ride! I didn't get a whole lot of riding in that day though.
I stopped early in Cody, WY (Yellowstone tourist trap town) and ate some
great BBQ at Bubba's BBQ. I didn't get a lot of pictures this day
either since I forgot to charge the battery in my camera the night
before... |

Day 4
I put on a LOT of miles this day - 600. You can see by the small
map here the route I planned on taking. My plan was to run from
Cody, up through Beartooth pass, down to Rt. 14a (again), down Rt. 14 to
Rt. 16 and stop in Buffalo, WY for the night. But, when I got
through Rt. 16, it was still early and I just didn't feel like stopping
yet. So I ended up in Spearfish, SD before I stopped for the
night.

Day 5 - The ride home
I wasn't sure if I was going to go all the way home this day. I
took Spearfish Canyon south to Rt. 85 which actually took me back into
Wyoming. From there, I went back into South Dakota again on Rt. 18
to Hot Springs. From there, I took US 385 south to US 20 in
Nebraska. In Nebraska, I took Rt. 250 south. It was on that
road that I had to stop for 3 bucks standing in the middle of the road
(4, 6 and 10 point). I couldn't get the camera out fast enough to
get a picture before they were took off though. The following 2
pictures were the only ones I took that day. On Rt. 250, I ran
into a stretch of road about 25 miles long where the grasshoppers
covered the road. They peppered my lower legs and boots as I rode
through them. It'll be a lot of fun cleaning all the guts off my
clothing. |
